Preserving Memory As We Age With Lifestyle Education

by Brianna Rauchman

Many people worry about mild cognitive changes and age-related memory loss. You can begin supporting your brain health early with courses at the Pacific Neuroscience Institute’s Lifestyle Program.

40% of individuals age 65+ experience memory loss. However, there is good news. New cognitive research clearly indicates that lifestyle behaviors and memory training techniques can prevent and/or stabilize cognitive decline. Even so, it remains difficult to obtain accurate brain health education, as conflicting advice swarms the Internet.

Lifestyle Education for Brain Health

Preserving and promoting brain health involves learning strategies geared towards using memory more effectively in real-life situations.

In addition, a wide range of brain-healthy behaviors, such as exercise, nutrition, stress management, and cognitive stimulation, are key components in keeping the brain in good shape across the lifetime.

“Am I too Late to Make a Change?”

It is never too early to invest in these important techniques, and it’s never too late to begin your brain health journey. Experts find that wherever you are in life, the changes you make today directly impact cognition for years to come.

What to Expect at PNI’s Lifestyle Program

Courses at Pacific Neuroscience Institute®’s Lifestyle Program, provide research-based education and training to promote cognitive wellness and enhance longevity.

For those experiencing normal aging or cognitive decline, our Vital MindsSM interactive classes teach important memory training strategies and review critical lifestyle choices aimed at improving or stabilizing overall memory functioning.

Each session teaches a range of innovative memory strategies designed to improve encoding (learning), retrieval (recall) and recognition, all of which enhance short-term memory skills.

Guided by expert memory trainers, you’ll discover the importance of implementing exercise, nutrition, and stress management tools to improve overall brain health.

The Breakdown

The Vital Minds curriculum covers five essential areas of focus, offering a holistic approach to healthy aging.

1. Memory Training

Discover the essential role of memory training and cognitive stimulation to protect your brain health, as well as techniques to successfully implement these practices in your daily routine.

2. Physical Activity

Physical activity directly impacts your mental wellness and brain health. During Vital Minds sessions, you’ll explore science-based fitness habits for improved mood and enhanced cognition.

3. Nutrition

Empowered by innovative nutrition research, you’ll learn how to successfully implement brain-healthy eating habits for increased longevity.

4. Stress Reduction

Chronic stress is a well-known risk factor for cognitive decline and memory loss. The Vital Minds program reviews the impact of stress on the mind and body, while providing actionable steps to promote effective stress management

5. Sleep

During sleep, cerebrospinal fluids clear out toxins, while slow electrical oscillations consolidate and encode your memories. InVital Minds, you’ll discover an optimized sleep hygiene routine (daily and nightly habits that influence your sleep quality). Seeking medical help to improve sleep may be advised.

About the Lifestyle Program

The Lifestyle Program at Pacific Neuroscience Institute offers a multimodal educational approach to optimize brain wellness by providing integrated and holistic guidance on how to preserve, improve and enhance cognitive brain fitness. We offer many courses that address memory concerns across the lifetime.

Participants in the Lifestyle Program learn about memory training, nutrition, and combined physical and cognitive fitness (dual tasking). Our cross-platform programs are personalized for each client. Virtual and in-person sessions are available.

Classes are modeled after decades of research, including Senior Director of the Lifestyle Program, Karen Miller, PhD’s publication in American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, that emphasizes the critical role of memory techniques and healthy behavior to improve mild cognitive changes.
