COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma Trial: Urgent Call For Blood Plasma Donations
by Zara Jethani
A new trial treatment using blood plasma donations from people who have fully recovered from COVID-19 infection may be helpful in treating other patients with COVID-19.
Convalescent Plasma Trial For COVID-19 Patients
The convalescent plasma trial, initiated by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Red Cross, aims to help identify potential donors in order to urgently increase options for physicians caring for COVID-19 patients.
Patients who have fully recovered from COVID-19 have antibodies in their plasma that can attack the coronavirus and protect them from becoming infected again. Their plasma may be rich with these antibodies that could be helpful in the treatment of COVID-19 infection in others.
Providence St. Joseph Health is one of the first organizations in the US to utilize convalescent plasma in a multicenter, nationwide clinical trial effort. Saint John’s Cancer Institute at Providence Saint John’s Health Center is an early trail site.
